The Straw Dog Writers Guild (SDWG) is excited to announce the call for applications for the 2026 Emerging Writer Fellowship. This program is designed to support women of color and gender-expansive writers of color based in Western Massachusetts who are at the early stages of their writing careers.

Created in 2019 by local writer Nicole Young-Martin, this fellowship aims to help emerging writers overcome barriers that may prevent them from accessing mentorship and pursuing publication.
For the 2027 cycle, the fellowship will focus on Poetry. We are seeking passionate writers who are eager to develop their craft and share their unique voices.
Benefits for the Selected Fellow
- $3,000 Grant: A financial grant to be used for writing-related expenses.
- Membership in SDWG: Complimentary membership during the fellowship year and the following year.
- Residency: a five-day residency at The Mount/Edith Wharton Cultural Center
- Mentorship Opportunities: Access to experienced mentors who can assist with craft, revision, publishing, promotion, or other writing needs identified by the Fellow.
- Promotion: Opportunities to promote your work through the SDWG mailing list and social media platforms.
- Artistic Involvement: A chance to help shape the artistic vision of SDWG as we continue to grow.
- Public Readings: Opportunities to read your work at Guild events.
- Teaching Opportunities: The possibility to teach or co-teach a workshop or program through SDWG.
Applicant Criteria
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Must self-identify as a woman or gender-expansive person of color.
- Must reside in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, or Hampshire County, Massachusetts.
- Must have a demonstrated passion for writing poetry.
